Sound can be an experience of calm or of disruption. It can move us through time, or hold us still, in its incessant repetition. Sound can trigger memories, or bring back what is no longer there, at least in moments. Vocalisations uses sound art to promote awareness of the auditory element of the environment, an aspect that is often overlooked in a world where what can be seen is given more privileges than what can be heard.
What you see around you is a built up commercial center. What you are walking through was once a large aviary forty years ago, where colourful birds flew in a lush setting of greenery. The flapping of wings and bird calls were part of the visitor experience of this place. he rustling of leaves in these gardens can bring back such memories for those who knew the park as an Aviary, a special moment in time in the history of Makati CBD.
Man affects and is influenced by the space he inhabits or moves through. A soundscape of layered vocalizations, this sound art installation is an invitation for the visitor to become aware of how actions and reactions, internal and external triggers, sound and silence, past and present, nature and urban life, create complex sense experiences that shape us and stay with us long after our surroundings have transformed.
Memory as Place, Place as Memory
site specific performance Bahay Nakpil, Quiapo
September 9 to September 10, 2017
11.00am, 2.00pm, 5.00pm
ticket information to be announced soon
The performance intends to provide a sensory experience of Gregoria De Jesus. Better known as “Oryang”, Gregoria De Jesus was first married to Andres Bonifacio, the Founding Father of the Philippine Revolution, and later to Julio Nakpil, a celebrated musician best known for composing the first Philippine National Anthem and also a member of the revolutionary movement.
As varied and as colorful as the many rooms of Bahay Nakpil, Memory as Place, Place as Memory explores the different facets of Oryang. We find her in distinctive states and phases of her life as experienced through music, dance, poetry, and food.
The 40-minute experiential tour paints a portrait of Oryang and the house as a vessel of her memories—as a lover, a wife, a revolutionary, and as a Filipina.
